Am I?

This self-portrait showcases Babiak’s confusion surrounding her own identity and the difference she imagines must exist between who she is and who she chooses to be. Am I? ‘s title refers to the instinctual response to doubt a person Babiak feels whenever someone else tells her an opinion or observation about her, good, bad, or completely neutral. Babiak feels that since she does not know who she is, there’s no way someone else could (this is not true) and this self portrait displays the results of that misconception openly. While its palette is vibrant, Am I? contains uncomfortable themes including distrust of others, distrust of the self, and feeling trapped due to the entire struggle it requires to know who you are and who you want to be.
