Respite Series

Respite is one of Babiak’s ways of showcasing the dichotomy she feels between her performative self and private self. It’s also included in the broad array of works that she considers a self-portrait using someone or something as a stand-in for her true self. She often uses this method as a way to communicate aspects of herself that she believes to be universal human truths, whether spoken or unspoken. Using another individual as a stand-in for herself signals the idea that, while she is creating what feels like a self-portrait to her, she remains aware of the fact that her feelings are often not unique to her.
