Saccharine was created during one of the state mandated quarantines that Babiak endured in 2020, along with the majority of her peers. Using materials she had in her well-stocked, make-shift home studio of an apartment, Babiak crafted a small sculpture of concrete, glitter glue, nail polish, and a lollipop. The building of this sculpture, while not a fast process, was mostly automatic. Babiak was sculpting from her heart, without a clear goal, and what spilled out was the sticky-sweet uncomfortable aesthetic of Saccharine. She believes that this piece came from a place of feeling conflicted between the amount of free time the quarantine provided and the numerous trade-offs that came with. If Saccharine were to be described in one sentence, it would be “too much of a good thing.”
